A new source of federal funding for multiple sclerosis (MS) research could soon be available. Congress currently is looking at a $15 million federal appropriation for MS research through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP), administered by the Department of Defense.You have a unique opportunity to help raise the importance of this issue and encourage support. • It’s critical to secure additional funding to move MS research forward. The National Institutes of Health, currently the primary source of funding for MS research, is set to reduce its funding.
• Gulf War veterans could be at increased risk of developing MS based on recent studies, including a study in the Annals of Neurology identifying 5,345 cases of MS among veterans that were deemed "service-connected" – a significant increase from previous evaluations.
• Another study found an unexpected, two-fold increase in MS between 1993 and 2000 in Kuwait, suggesting a potential environmental trigger for MS.
