Is it possible to get a consult with a pain specialist? They will have more ideas and knowledge about pain control because it is all they do. There is too much research in medicine to keep up with every area. If my MS specialist can’t get a specific symptom under control by doing the typical things, I have always gone to a specialist in that problem, like going to a gastroenterologist for severe constipation (he developed a program, after several tries, that got it under control).

I have had pain that varies from about a two to thirty plus on a scale of one to ten. Fortunately, meds have always been able to get it under control.

There are some meds that are used for very severe pain. I had a psychotherapy patient who had excruciating pain from a severe spinal cord injury which was made tolerable, though it didn’t go away, with fentanyl. It is often used for cancer patients. Actually, you might get some good information about pain control from searching cancer-related sites. It’s one of the main things oncologists do.
